The Norton Desktop

Start Where You Want

When you use a StartUp group in Norton Desktop, the items in the group run first, then the desktop shell appears as though it was the last application run. If you want to work immediately in an application every time you start Windows, execute the application from the Run= line in WIN.INI's [windows] section instead of including it in your StartUp group.

Application-Specific Configuration

The options you set in the Control Center affect all applications. If you're using FileAssist, you can make application-specific settings. First run the application, access its Open dialog box, and click on the Config button. If you change resolutions or color depth you'll have to rebuild your icon information. Go to the Control Center, click Quick Access, then the Advanced button and the reset button.

File Manager Extensions

To allow third parties to include menu items on the main Norton Desktop menu (these would normally appear in File Manager), go to the Control Center, select the Defaults category, click the Advanced button, and check the box for File Manager Extensions to Main Desktop Menu.

Close Parent Upon Launch

To launch a group item and simultaneously close the group window that contains it--or to open a nested group and close its parent group window--double-click on the item with your right mouse button.

Open Parent Upon Close

To close a group window and simultaneously open its parent group, use your right mouse button to double-click on the group window Control-Menu icon.

Save Desktop Space

Turn off the desktop menu bar and title bar to reveal more desktop space from the Desktop Layout screen in the Control Center. To access the desktop menu options, right-click on the desktop.

Moving Items In and Out of a Group

Move a desktop item into a group or to move a group item from a group to the desktop by pressing Alt while you click-and-drag the item to its new location.

Speed Search

To quickly move to a directory or file, make the tree pane or file pane active, either by clicking it or tabbing to it. Then start typing the name of the item you want. A Speed Search dialog box appears and as you type, the Drive window will update to match what you type as closely as possible.

Multiple File Selection

Besides using Shift+click and Ctrl+click to select multiple files, you can select multiple files with your right mouse button. Right-clicking on a file or directory toggles selection of that item on and off without affecting items already selected. A right click-and-drag can be used to highlight a contiguous group of directories and files. If a menu pop up when you try this, ignore it. Go to Control Center and select Drive Window/Advanced/Extended Selection.

Right Mouse Button Override

Whether your right mouse button selects multiple files or brings up a pop-up menu, you can make it do the opposite by pressing Shift when you click it.

Open Quick Access Group

Double-click on the desktop with your right mouse button to open the top-level Quick Access group.

Create Desktop Items

Use desktop items--similar to tool icons--to launch frequently used applications, files or directories. To create a desktop item, drag an application, file or directory from a drive window to the desktop.

Save the Day

Save your desktop configuration without using Options/Save Configuration. Go to the Control Center then click the Default category and check Save Configuration On Exit.

Oldies but Goodies

You can use your NDW 2.*x* menus by choosing Options/Customize, then clicking the Menus button. Click on Load to select from a list of menus.

What a View

You can quickly view a file in the View pane by clicking View on the toolbar. To view multiple files, drag them from a drive window to the Viewer tool icon.

Changing Views

To change the view of a group when it is in Toolbox view, click once on the Control Menu icon, then choose View Group As and select the appearance you want.

More Pop-Up Menus

You can enable pop-up menus for drive windows by going to the Control Center and selecting the Drive Windows/Advanced.

Printer Title

You can change the name label under a printer tool icon by choosing Label from the printer tool icon pop-up menu.
